Mathematik (CBK) at WU Vienna: exam dates in the winter semester 2026/27

You sit the Mathematik exam of the CBK, the Common Body of Knowledge in WU Vienna's bachelor's programme in Business, Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo), in one of WU's exam weeks (Prüfungswochen). It is for you if you have passed the STEOP, the introductory phase, and Mathematik is next, or if you are retaking a failed exam.

The deadlines are the tight part. You register only in LPIS, WU's registration system, and only during a fixed window before each exam week.¹

The course itself prepares you for the content: the lectures, the exercises and the forum on Canvas, WU's learning platform. There is also a walk-in tutorial for exam preparation, where you work through exercises with a tutor.²

Mathematik (CBK) exam dates in the winter semester

In the winter semester 2026/27 you sit Mathematik on one of these three days. Day and time come from WU's exam timetables, the deadlines from its Terminplaner, the calendar of dates and deadlines.

Dates as of 27 September 2026, checked against WU's exam timetables and Terminplaner. As of that date, registration for 8 October is still open, until 1 October, noon. If you miss it, your earliest date is 27 November.

According to the timetables in the table, all three exams take place on the WU campus. Each timetable books two hours; the syllabus does not say how long you actually write. The timetables note that changes are possible until the start of the semester, so check the day and time in LPIS once your room appears there.³

The exam has 20 multiple-choice questions with 5 options each. A right answer earns 1 point, a blank 0; your first 3 wrong answers cost nothing, every further one 0.25 points. You pass with 11 points.²

Registering and deregistering for Mathematik (CBK) in LPIS

Each window opens on a Monday at 2 pm and closes ten days later, on a Thursday at noon. You can deregister in LPIS during the same window; WU names no separate, later deadline for deregistering.⁴

Register directly in LPIS only. WU does not guarantee that a registration made through software that is not WU's own will go through, and adds: no support, no late registration. So check that the exam appears in your registration list (Anmeldeliste) in LPIS.¹

To register, you must have passed every exam of the STEOP.⁷

If you are not going to sit the exam, deregister. If you are registered and miss the exam without deregistering, you are blocked from that exam for 10 calendar weeks from the exam date, though you do not lose an attempt. The only exception is a documented important reason, such as a doctor's or employer's certificate. You submit the proof online only, by 2 pm on the Monday two weeks before the next exam week, which is when the next registration window opens: 9 November after the October exam, 11 January after November, and 15 February 2027 after January.¹

Without that proof, missing an exam costs you the next date. Miss 8 October and you are blocked until mid-December; miss 27 November and you are blocked until early February; miss 26 January and you are blocked until early April, past the March exam week. We worked this out from the block of 10 calendar weeks.

Room and time of the Mathematik (CBK) exam

WU only assigns rooms once registration has closed. From the day in the last column of the table, always the day after the window closes, LPIS shows your exam room and time. Note both: if you turn up in the wrong room, you cannot sit the exam.¹

Be on time: under WU's exam guideline, if you arrive late you can be excluded from the exam.⁸

What to bring to the Mathematik (CBK) exam

Two aids are allowed. A calculator without functions for differentiation, integration or matrices, without a function for solving systems of linear equations and without text memory: the syllabus gives the TI-30XS MultiView, the TI-30X Plus MultiView, the TI-30X Plus Mathprint and the TI-30X IIS as examples, and explicitly bans the TI-30X Pro MathPrint. And a dictionary, if German is not your first language.²

WU's exam guideline covers everything else. To prove who you are, you show your WU student ID card; an official photo ID may be accepted instead. Unless the syllabus says otherwise, the banned items include phones, smartwatches and other electronic devices, watches and clocks of any kind, earplugs and headphones, formula sheets and lecture notes, and also correction fluid, erasers, highlighters and rulers. Anything of that kind you have with you must be switched off, where possible, and put in a bag before the exam starts. If you leave the room during the exam, even briefly, you hand in your paper; you may continue only if the invigilators allow it in exceptional circumstances, such as acute circulatory problems.⁸

So you may not bring formula sheets of your own. Whether formulas are handed out in the exam is stated neither in the syllabus nor in the guideline.

If you fail the Mathematik (CBK) exam

WU has four weeks from the exam date to grade it.⁸

By our calculation, that deadline falls on 5 November for the 8 October exam, before the November window opens on 9 November. For 27 November it falls on 25 December, before the January window. For 26 January it falls on 23 February 2027, in the middle of the registration window for the March exam week. Whether you can register for March while your grade is still pending is stated neither in WU's Terminplaner nor on its exam week and exam information pages. The March window runs until 25 February, noon, and until then you can also deregister.⁴

If you fail in October, your next date is 27 November; if you fail in November, it is 26 January. After January come the exam weeks of the summer semester 2027. WU has not yet published whether and on which day Mathematik is held there: its exam week page so far only lists the timetables up to the winter semester 2026/27, and it gives no date for the next ones.¹

You have 5 attempts at Mathematik. If your last attempt is graded as a fail, your enrolment in the programme is closed.⁹

Reviewing your Mathematik (CBK) exam

You can inspect your exam documents (Einsicht) within 6 months of the grade being announced. You may make copies, but you may not take the exam paper away. Multiple-choice questions and their options are excluded from copying, which in Mathematik means the questions themselves.⁹

Examiners may offer group review sessions. If you cannot attend one, you may send someone else with your written authorisation; for good reason, you may also inspect your exam outside the group sessions. If you fail, you must be told the reasons if you ask for them.⁸

WU asks you to send questions about the review and about grade entry to the examiners in charge (Prüfungsverantwortliche).¹

Preparing for Mathematik (CBK) before your date

1. Start by putting together a mock exam of 20 questions, for example from the chapter Gemischte Aufgaben (mixed exercises) of the free textbook by Birgit Rudloff and Achim Zeileis, work it against the clock and score right, wrong and blank answers with the exam's rule.¹⁰ From 9 November you can also use our free mock exam.
2. See which chapters cost you points. Which topics belong to which chapter is in our guide to the Mathematik (CBK) exam. The first chapter has two articles with the method and practice questions, one on cost, revenue and monopoly and one on arithmetic sequences.
3. Drill exactly those chapters, then sit the next mock.
4. Use the negative-marking calculator to decide in advance how many questions you can guess, given the answers you are sure of, without putting the 11 points at risk.
5. Then decide whether to register, by the end of the window at the latest: for October by 1 October, for November by 19 November, for January by 21 January, each at noon.
